Warm Lemon Water: A Great Contribution To Your Healthy Morning Routine

My goal—for myself, my family and my readers—is to achieve great health. The best way to achieve this goal, or any goal, is by getting a good start to the day. After all, how effective will you be if you wake up late, feel exhausted, are in a horrible mood or start the day with junk food?

I now pay close attention to my morning routine. I know that if I start the morning off with a bang, the rest of my day will be pretty awesome. 

There are 3 steps to my morning routine; the first of which I believe has had a profound impact on my health. 

Achieve Great Health: 4 Reasons Why I Start My Day with Lemon Water

Step #1 of my morning routine is to drink warm lemon water with cayenne. Here are 4 reasons why I think everyone should start their day off with warm lemon water. 

1. Improve Lymph Flow


Warm lemon water gets lymph flowing properly. Dehydration is one of the greatest contributors to illness and a lack of energy. Drinking plenty of water with lemon moves harmful toxins and mineral buildups out of the body through the lymph system. 

Also, even though lemon juice is acidic, it's low sugar and high alkaline mineral content has an alkalizing effect.  We don't want to much acidity in our body, since this can be very harmful.  If you eat a lot of white bread, soda, processed and fast foods, and to a lesser extent meat your acidity level could be high, which might increase your risk to many degenerative diseases, from arthritis to heart disease to cancer.

2. Electrolyte Balance

Raw food guru David Wolfe’s article on the topic of warm lemon water provides 20 positive effects of drinking it each day. One effect is that lemons provide a hydrating supply of calcium, potassium and magnesium for electrolyte balance.

3. Liver Cleansing


Drinking some lemon water helps rid your body of harmful toxins, primarily through the lymph and the liver, thereby keeping you on the road to health. 

The liver is the main detoxing organ in our body and it is usually at it's most active in the morning,  and the lemon helps speed up the elimination of toxins.

4. Better Digestion

This routine encourages the release of gastric juices so that your breakfast is easily digested. 

Drinking warm lemon water stimulates saliva and sends a signal to your body to get the digestion rolling, which should improve your digestion.  When you digestion improves, your fat burning capabilities improve as well.  Faulty digestion might prevent your body from absorbing the nutrients it needs to burn fat.

Why Do I Add Turmeric, Cinnamon, Honey & Pepper?

Here are a few reasons why I add these items:

  • Turmeric: The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, which might be linked to alleviating inflammation.  From my years of playing hockey and my age, I have been feeling some joint pain and I have researched enough to believe it would make sense to add this to my diet on a daily basis.
  • Pepper:  Ewww!  Weird, why add this?  From some more research, if you don't add pepper to turmeric you will not get the benefit of the active ingredient, curcumin, which is really what helps inflammation.  In order for the body to absorb the curcumin from the turmeric, I add the pepper.  Not a lot, but just enough.
  • Honey:  It helps the body regulate blood sugar levels.  If you're looking for a quick energy boost, such as before a workout, honey can suffice.  Since I workout right after this drink, this is why I include some honey.
  • Cinnamon:  The antioxidants in cinnamon have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help lower the risk of disease.  I also only use True cinnamon, since some of the cheaper store bought stuff probably contains Cassia, which may cause problems in large doses due to the coumarin content.

The Rest Of My Morning Routine 

Making this special morning concoction is incredibly simple. All you need is a mug of warm water, the juice of about half a lemon, 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of honey and a dash of pepper. Stir and enjoy!

Immediately after that, I start my morning workout. I alternate my workouts each day, either by doing a BeachBody workout or following some of the top workouts on YouTube. Either way, I get the required resistance and cardio training for optimal health.
