Can An App Actually Improve Your Health? Let's Find Out

Meal planning: everyone knows it's important but who has time?

Let's say you can muster the extra time to cook on Sunday evening. Do you have the time or energy to count calories, develop recipes, and create a grocery list that fits your fitness goals?

I definitely don't.

That's exactly why I want to talk about Eat This Much.

Don't run for the back button yet. I know what you're thinking: "another nutrition app, Chris?"

If you follow my blog, you probably know that I wouldn't even bring this up if I didn't believe it was worth the time and effort.

Eat This Much has helped me meet my fitness goals, reduce food waste, and create new recipes I never would have even considered a few months ago. It's benefited me tremendously and it might just help you too.

Here's how it works.

Eating Well Requires Constant Diligence and Supervision

If you're like me, your biggest problem is eating well on a consistent basis.

We're constantly bombarded with poor food choices. From the gas station checkout and impulse grocery store displays to the decadent appetizers and desserts at restaurants, tasty temptations stare us down everywhere we go.

It's hard to argue against convenience.

Most people don't have time to sit down each week, think objectively about their diet, plan meals, and take a pro-active approach to eating.

Even the best of us fall off track sometimes. Of course, splurging is okay (and encouraged) now and then – but it's definitely a slippery slope. We can't always rely on our friends and family to push us back in line. (Would we even listen to them if they did?)

That's exactly why I was thrilled to find Eat This Much.

Yeah, I know. You have so many options when it comes to health and nutrition apps, but I deleted the others on my phone after using Eat This Much for a few weeks.

Like any nutrition app, it doesn't come without its own shortcomings, but the versatility, precision, and customization make up for these minor pitfalls.

There Are Thousands of Health Apps out There, What Makes This One so Great?

Eat This Much is a nutrition planning app for Android and iOS devices. After using it for a while, I realized it's probably the best tool around for people who want to take their health seriously but need help staying focused.

You can set your goals, develop long-term (personalized) meal plans, chose your preferred diet (keto, vegetarian, mediterranean) and track your calorie intake.

"But Chris, couldn't I just do that with a pen and paper?"

Sure, but are you doing that with a pen and paper right now? Do you have the motivation to do that for more than a week? I sure don't. Plus, I like the idea of someone else planning meals – I actually enjoy – for me. I barely have time to grocery shop let alone count calories, meal plan, and form a grocery list to help me reach my fitness goals.

Unlike many apps (not just nutrition options), Eat This Much works well on both desktop and phones – that's the first thing that really stood out to me. Twiddling with large amounts of data on a phone can get annoying.

I know you're probably still apprehensive: "another fitness app?" Let me explain why I find this app so great and how it's helped me reach some of my goals.

Eat This Much

Personalized Nutrition Profile

First things first. (I suggest doing this on a desktop.) You'll login and create your personalized profile.

You'll provide a bunch of information like gender, height, and weight as well as your goals. Are you trying to reduce your weight or gain muscle? Do you have any dietary restrictions or plans like vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free?

By providing as much information as possible, Eat This Much can provide you with the best meal options.

Everything Is Customizable

Don't like beans, tomatoes, or cilantro? Let the app know. Working within a specific budget? Include that information.

The longer you use Eat This Much, the better it gets because it stores your previous grocery lists, recipes, and information. Find a recipe you love? Save it. Didn't care for something? The app won't offer it again.

You can even save multiple nutrition profiles based on your changing goals. One week you may want to drop a few pounds while another week you might want increase muscle mass.

Autogenerate Meal Plans and Recipes

After setting up your meal layout and profile, Eat This Much autogenerates meal plans.

I like to plan my meals one week at a time, but you can select just about any frequency and amount.

The amount of meals you choose per day won't make a difference calorie-wise. The app already knows which types of ingredients you need (and how much) to stick within required calorie amounts and meet your ultimate goals.

Eat This Much has a huge database filled with recipe options, but you can also include your personal favorites. If you're like me and crave the same foods each day, you can set the same breakfast each day. If you get bored easily, the app can switch it up for you.

A Dynamic Grocery List

Now that you have your meal plans it's time to grocery shop. Eat This Much gives you a grocery list that you can change and update if needed. As you shop, swipe the items you grab and the app will add them to your pantry.

The Pantry Feature is Awesome and Reduces Food Waste

This feature is amazing if you take the time to use it.

Let's say you buy a dozen eggs but your meal plan for the week only requires six eggs. Eat This Much will remember that you have six extra eggs when it autogenerates your meal plan for the next week.

Just think about the possibilities when this applies to your entire kitchen: it gives you the opportunity to actually use leftovers and odd ball ingredients.

Honestly, how much food do you end up throwing out each week? This makes sure you can make use of what you already have which drastically cuts your food waste and budget.

Long-term Planning for Success

If you want to take charge of your health, Eat This Much is with you for the long-haul.

It requires a lot of initial effort on your part: filling your pantry, creating your nutrition profile, swiping your shopping lists. Once you start using the app, however, the process moves a lot quicker and becomes almost second nature.

Eat This Much is so beneficial for creating unique meals while meeting your goals that you'll end up wondering how you ever managed without it.

What You Should Know Before Giving Eat This Much a Shot

Don't waste your time if you aren't – or don't want to be – serious about reaching your fitness goals. Eat This Much is great for people who need someone telling them what to do but can't afford a combination life-nutrition coach. (Who can?)

Obviously, you need to put in the bulk of the effort yourself. Eat This Much is a powerful tool to keep you focused.

Since the app is so incredibly personalized, it's not ideal for families. This doesn't mean, however, that multiple people can't reap the benefits of one app. Eat This Much gives you the option of increasing serving numbers during your meal planning.

You can still use the grocery list, pantry, recipes, meal planning, and multiple nutrition profiles to create healthy and delicious meals for your family – they just can't track their own health profile and progress.

Can an App Actually Improve Your Health? Let's Find OutWho Should Use Eat This Much?

The great thing about Eat This Much is the customization. That's what makes this app excellent for anyone.

  • People who want to cook more but aren't sure what to make or how to start
  • Fitness enthusiasts or athletes who want a personalized option for meal planning and tracking progress
  • Folks who want to get healthier but don't know the first thing about nutrition
  • Nutrition coaches looking for a way to record client profiles
  • Entrepreneurs or workers on-the-go
  • Folks with food allergies (gluten, dairy, etc.) who want a wider variety of meal choices and concise planning
  • People on specific diets (keto, paleo, vegan, etc.) who are sick of eating the same thing every day
  • People trying to eat healthy while sticking to a specific budget

Health Is All About Striking A Balance

If you're like me, you find it hard to strike a balance and stick with it. We get busy, life happens, and our health always comes second.

It's impossible to eat healthy all the time. Even bikini models splurge after an event or competition.

If you aren't willing to commit, the app probably won't help you much. But if you're willing to hold up your half of the bargain, Eat This Much can take all the leg work out of grocery shopping, meal planning, and nutrition tracking.

You really get back the effort you put into this app – that's what makes it stand out from all the other nutrition apps out there.

Most of us aren't bikini models or body builders: we don't have the money and resources to hire personal nutrition coaches and meal planners. Eat This Much can fill that gap.

Seems like an interesting app. How would it work if I only had the free version... do I have to log in everyday for it to make a meal plan? Would I be able to see previous days?

Lisa, great question. Using the Free version would require for you to login daily to generate your plan for that day. Unlike the premium version you can do the whole week in advance.

Did you see a sample meal plan? Here is one

Also, I noticed you are a keto fan. With Eat This Much you can structure a keto meal plan very easily. I used it. ;-)

Hope that helps!
