I’ve always been an active dude – you’ve got to love those feel-good endorphins and adrenaline rushes. But let me tell you something: Since retiring from hockey and having kids, it is so much easier to slough off on workouts.
Exercise routines take even more of a back seat when raising a family. There is so much to do every day anyway, but even more so when you’ve got kids.
Some days I feel like a taxi driver taking the kids to all of their activities. I know a lot of you are busy moms and dads, so you know what I’m talking about!
What are we supposed to do? Just give up?
That’s why I’m going to share one of the most important health tips I have to give: a quick, effective exercise routine.
I am finally putting that Kinesiology Degree of mine to good use.
Why Exercise Is So Important, Even For Busy Parents
Here are a few reasons why exercise is a must—especially for moms and dads.
- Reduce your chance of disease
- Better chance of a longer life
- Combat now-common childhood diseases
- Increase energy
- Lose weight
- Tone/build the body of your dreams
- Sleep better
- Reduce stress/the effects of stress
- Improve brain function.
Right now, tell yourself when you can find 30 minutes a day to do a quick workout. For me, I do it in the morning right after I take the kids to school and before I do anything else that day.
Maybe for you it is before everyone wakes up? Right after work? Lunch? Doesn't matter, but whenever it is put it in your calendar and make it happen.
You can find 30 minutes in your day. Put it in your calendar like it is a meeting for work and get it done!
Thank You, YouTube! Exercise Routines You Can Do At Home
So how can busy moms and dads work exercise into their daily life? Is there a way to get your workout in without having to pay a monthly gym membership?
I have some great news! You can get an awesome and effective workout at home. In fact, I’ve been working out at home for the past 8 years, and I’m in the best shape of my life.
Even better—each exercise routine I am about to share is thirty minutes or less!
This is a compilation of some of the most popular exercise routines on YouTube. For more options, you can check the Top Lists on Shape.com and the Huffington Post.
One of my favorite healthy tips—easy, at home exercise routines:
Day 1: Plyo/Cardio - Build strength and speed with this short plyo workout.
Day 2: Lower Body or Total Body Resistance – I found this lower body workout last week and it is intense—thank God it’s only 20 minutes!
Day 3: Cardio/Core – Zuzana has been one of my go to trainers online when I need a short, kick ass workout. Her six pack will totally inspire you in this thirty minute core workout.
Day 4: Stretch/Yoga – Combining a rocker vibe with yoga flow, Tara Stiles workout is relaxing and effective. Just let go!
Day 5: Upper Body – Another killer workout from Fitness Blender that uses your body weight to build strength.
Day 6: Cardio – This cardio workout gets the kids involved!
My Healthy Tip: Don’t Let Your Exercise Routine Take a Back Seat
If you want to ensure that you and your kids have a healthy life, you have to work out. Thankfully, we don’t have to spend hours in a gym to see the results. We just need 30 minutes each day.
Don’t forget to get your kids involved. You’ll get to spend quality time with them, training them and showing them by example what it takes to live a healthy life.
Ready to get moving? Great—let’s do this!
