3 Reasons Why HIIT Training Is the Best Workout You Will Ever Experience

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably been searching for the best workout. There are so many options that it can easily get confusing. Not only that, everyone seems to have an opinion regarding which workout is really the best. 

I’ve tried a number of these workouts over the years since I retired from hockey.  Now that I’m not playing professionally, I want to make sure I do all I can to stay healthy, strong, and fit. The best way for me to do that, besides eating greens every day :-), is to workout. 

But even with my athletic experience, I still wondered if I would find the best form of exercise.

Over the past few years, I’ve been doing high-intensity interval training or HIIT. You’ve probably heard of it—it’s hot stuff right now. But some people are skeptical because the results claimed are so unbelievable. 

I’m here to tell you, though, that in my humble opinion HIIT training is the best workout you will ever do. 

3 Reasons Why I Believe HIIT Workouts Are the Best Option Out There

We all know why we need to exercise regularly. Yes, it helps make us look amazing, but it also makes us strong no matter what age we are. 

Exercise also strengthens our various organ systems and has been shown to reduce a person’s risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and many other diseases. It is one of the best ways to boost our energy levels; and, in some cases, can be just as effective as antidepressants for treating and even prevent clinical depression

Once we’ve made the decision to regularly workout, the next step is to find the most effective workout, especially if we want to make some quick transformations. That is where HIIT training comes in. Many personal trainers, doctors, and researchers agree that HIIT training is incredibly effective, safe, and an incredible time-saving way to workout. 

Those experts include Dr. Joseph Mercola, an osteopathic and alternative physician; as well as Drs. Josh and Chelsea Axe, he is a chiropractor, nutritionist, and natural health physician; she is a nutrition and fitness expert. 

Dr. Mercola and Drs. Axe have written about the recent studies conducted around HIIT training and recommend it as one of the best training routines around. 

And, I happen to agree heartily with them. 

Here are three reasons why I feel that these types of workouts are the best ever. 

1. It Does Amazing Things for Your Metabolism 

The whole purpose of HIIT training is to push your metabolism to a level where it’s never been before.  This is due to the ability to burn fat during the workout, but also afterward, called the after-burn effect. The intervals of various exercises at increasing rates of intensity can boost the metabolism so that you’re burning fat up to forty-eight hours after the workout

The higher intensity periods last from thirty seconds to eight minutes. During the rest of the workout, participants engage in normal cardio and strength exercises. 

These workouts turn your body into a constant fat burning machine. How great is that? 

2. Amazing Results in an Incredible Amount of Time 

There are a lot of HIIT workouts that take up only about thirty minutes of your day. 

Others are more intense and ask you to push it for an hour. Obviously, you wouldn’t want to do more than you are physically capable of doing. 

There are some people who are only able to start with a few minutes each day. But even people who start with the shorter workouts are able to get fast results. And eventually they can work up to longer workouts

The results truly are amazing. Some trainers claim that up to 900 calories can be burned in less than an hour.  Add to that the after effect of the so called after-burn and it’s easy to see why people are in love with this type of workout. They get results fast. They lose weight, burn fat, and add muscle. 

And, I can tell you from personal experience, you will feel incredibly strong after doing one of these workouts. Because guess what? You are, and your strength will only continue to astonish you. 

3. It Can Save You Some Money 

A HIIT workout can be done without having to invest in any workout equipment or a gym membership. This is great because it means you can work out anytime, anywhere.

There are, however, some HIIT training programs that I recommend taking a look at and possibly making a purchase. The reason I recommend these is because they are great for inspiration and provide guidance for beginners so they feel like they know what they’re doing.

But you don’t have to invest in a workout program to see results. You can do one quickly and easily in your own home. Here is a sample workout from the fitness experts at DailyBurn.com

The 15-Minute HIIT Workout: 

Workout In 10 minutes, complete 20 reps of each move below and as many rounds of the circuit as possible. 

  • Push-Up 
  • Sit-Up 
  • Squat 

For the last 5 minutes, complete 10 burpees every minute on the minute. In other words, perform 10 burpees in 60 seconds, resting for any remaining time in the minute. At the start of the next minute, perform 10 burpees again. 

The Daily Burn has workouts that are longer, too, but if you’re short on time the fifteen minute workout will still allow you to blast some calories. The New York Times also had an article with multiple HIIT workouts of varying times. 

According to the American Academy of Sports Medicine, it is important to vary your training program. In other words, don’t just stick to HIIT workouts. They recommend adding at least two days per week. I will write more about strength training in a future post.
