(This is an update to a post I wrote back on June 13, 2016 about 17 foods our family buy at Costco. We still get some of these items today, but here are 18 more we buy often.)
The only worry my wife Jodi and I get from maintaining a healthy and organic lifestyle is the cost. This is probably the only downside we experience because everything else about organic living is pretty much simple and fun.
Non-organic foods, on the other hand, are often known to contain immunity destroying antibiotics, cancer-causing hormones, as well as pesticides. A pesticide is basically a poison designed to kill pests. So why would someone buy or even eat food that has been sprayed with poison? Beats me!
My health and that of my family always come first. Speaking of my family, we have a 13-year-old who is eating us out of the house. His 10-year-old sister is closely following suit. At such ages, they are both super active and we need to be conscientious on what we spend our money on and still maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Even though we believe local is important, when you have a family of four that is growing and still want to eat healthily, sometimes you need to shop in places like Costco. If you haven’t been to this wholesaler in a while, then you’ll be surprised to learn that Costco is now a huge purveyor of organic and healthier foods.
While the chain has had a long reputation of selling enormous packages of cookies, chips, huge bundles of tissue rolls, and giant stuffed bears, it is now home to the latest trendy eats.
A Costco Shopping List of Healthy and Organic Products
The items on this list are great because they can be eaten on their own as snacks, as a dinner meal, or used as alternative additives to other meals. More importantly, everyone in my family loves them.
So whether you are a seasoned shopper or you just got your membership, here are some of healthiest options from Costco:
1. Kirkland Organic Butter
More and more people are coming to accept the fact that organic butter is the best butter. However, we still have a lot more people who are tempted to purchase the less expensive non-organic butter.
Well, let’s put it this way. Organic butter is free from GMOs, antibiotics, and pesticides. Regardless of the few dollars on top, it is a much better choice than the conventional butter and margarine.
2. Dr. Praeger’s Organic California Style Veggie Burger
Carrots, spinach, broccoli, and peas have joined forces to create the healthiest and most popular burger in town.
This burger tastes nothing like the ordinary. It is slightly sweet, vaguely curry-ish, and has a nice feel in the mouth. This is something worth trying out. Moreover, it is a good substitute for beef burgers that may be unhealthy to your kids if eating non-grass fed beef.
3. Country Cuisine Frozen Organic Chopped Spinach
Low in fat and even lower in cholesterol, organic spinach is high in zinc and niacin. It is also a great source of protein, calcium, fiber, magnesium, potassium, Vitamins A, C, E, K, and B6.
In other words, it is loaded with good things that will be beneficial to the health of your growing kids.
4. Sprague Organic Black Beans (8-pack)
Organic black beans are a simple and delicious dietary option that can increase your family’s overall health in so many ways.
To begin with, black beans are good for the digestion and regulation of the body’s blood sugar levels. They can also help prevent cardiovascular diseases and improve on various nervous system functions.
5. Organica Coffee Zavida
Apart from giving you a kick-start in the morning, drinking this organic coffee can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases and extend your lifespan.
Organic coffee usually comes from farms that meet strict standards and regulations set and enforced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to these requirements, organic coffee should be free from any chemical contaminants.
6. MadeGood Organic Chocolate Chip Granola Bars
Are you tired of buying your children unhealthy candy? Well, Costco has good news for you. The MadeGood organic chocolate chip granola bars are awesome and healthy treats that your kids will love.
Made from gluten-free oats and tasty chocolate chips, these granola bars are to die for. With its chewy goodness, it will not only satisfy your sweet tooth but also provide beneficial antioxidants to your body.
7. Basse Organic Shelled Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are delicious in stews and soups, and can also add great texture to cookies, puddings, and other desserts. You can also sprinkle them over cereals, oatmeal and vegetable dishes for a nutritional boost.
Pumpkin seeds are rich in protein and dietary fiber as well as minerals like magnesium, iron, zinc, and potassium.
8. Basse Organic Sunflower Seeds
Despite their small sizes, sunflower seeds are a great source of minerals, essential oils, and vitamins. Not only are they the perfect snack for a health-conscious family, but also offer tremendous health benefits such as supporting healthy cholesterol levels.
I make a yummy trail mix with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins, pecans, almonds, brazil nuts and macadamia nuts.
9. Organic Unrefined Coconut Sugar
This is a natural sweetener that can be used as an alternative to the regular granulated sugar. It may be a little more expensive, but it yields some notable health benefits. For instance, coconut sugar is recommended for diabetes and holds traces of minerals and vitamins.
10. Garcia – Organic Chickpea Crackers
Did you know that crackers made from chickpeas flour contain 3-6 times more iron than in regular products? This offers a great nutrient-rich option to the growing gluten-free market.
11. Kirkland Organic Hummus
This is a spread or paste made from chickpeas, sesame, olive oil, organic garlic, tahini, and lemon juice. Attributing to its superb health factors and appealing flavor, organic hummus is now one of the latest food trends that has gained immense popularity in the country.
This goes great with the Garcia Chickpea crackers
12. Garden Fresh Organic Salsa
Traditional salsa is one of the world’s most popular condiments. It also turns out to be a nutritional powerhouse. Organic salsa is the best way of adding flavor to your dinner meals while delivering the much-needed nutrients.
13. Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayonnaise
It doesn’t take much digging to figure out that most of the oils we consume are generally poor choices. I tend to believe that avocado just doesn’t get the respect it deserves.
Did you know that this fruit contains over 75% fat? Incredible, isn’t it? What an avocado lacks in sweetness, it over-achieves in satiety.
14. Organic Meadow 2% Milk Boxes
This Organic Meadow milk has a rich taste with a fine texture that goes down easily. It contains sufficient amount of Vitamin D and A that will boost your kids’ growth and development.
Not a big fan of drinking milk, however, I prefer organic milk over juice boxes, so the kids and I made a deal. :-)
15. Kirkland Organic Greek Plain Yogurt
Apart from being used as an ingredient for many delightful smoothies, plain yogurt can also be used to soothe the stomach. It contains pro-biotics that balance the microflora in your gut. This is good for digestion. I do wish they would keep the fat in and not make it 0%.
Yes, I know I said I didn't drink milk, but I do add some Greek Yogurt once in awhile to my smoothie to gain the benefits of the pro-biotics and protein you get from it. This is my "You Diet" :-)
16. Superfresh Growers Organic Cherries
Cherries are a favorite summer fruit in many parts of the country. They are usually used as dessert fruits for pies and cakes, as well as garnishes for cocktails. They are also rich in antioxidants.
17. Kirkland Organic Eggs
Many people don’t know this, but there is a great difference between organic eggs and non-organic eggs. Organic eggs come from chickens that are given 100% organic feed, free from any chemical residue.
These eggs are rich in amino acids, minerals, and vitamins that need to keep you and your family happy.
18. Summerfresh Organic Citrus Chickpea Salad
This is just a hearty dinner salad that is packed with vitamins, protein, antioxidants, as well as flavorful herb-citrus dressing. It is a great and healthy item to add to your lunch or dinner table.
Why I Feed My Family This Way
I bet you care for your health and that of your family. This should be enough motivation for you to start and maintain a healthy lifestyle. And using the list above, you can get healthy food products at a pocket-friendly budget.
It is also a high time that you start paying attention to labels and ingredients on everything you buy. Even though there is no concrete evidence of what artificial preservatives and sweeteners do to a person’s body, you still need to take precaution.
You wouldn’t want your family to be used as guinea pigs for finding out what these things can do, would you?
Buying quality and organic food products from stores like Costco will save you a lot of cash down the road in prescription drugs, doctor visits, and medical costs. You can choose to pay the organic farmer or pay the hospital. You decide!
